Filipino as a subject integrates literature and language to provide meaningful, relevant, and natural learning situations in which competencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed. Listening includes auditory discrimination and cognitive comprehension. Speaking explores and hones expressions, structures, and functions used in oral communication. Reading covers the four dimensions of comprehensionliteral, interpretative, critical analysis and application, and creation, as well as vocabulary development and study skills. Writing ranges from readiness skills and mechanics to functional writing. Primary emphasis is put on helping pupils understand, analyze, appreciate, and imbibe moral, spiritual, social, and cultural values as they encounter a range of literary genres and participate in collaborative learning activities in order that they may develop into true Christian, Filipino Augustinians.
